Hejaz Super Closing Down: What Are Your Alternatives?

Hejaz Islamic Super Is Closing Down
Hejaz Islamic Super & Pension is closing, meaning existing members need to consider what happens to their superannuation and where their existing balance and future contributions will go.
If you are a Hejaz Super member, there are several important deadlines approaching in September and October 2026.
You may also be asking: What are the alternatives to Hejaz Super?
This can be particularly important for Muslim Australians who want their superannuation to continue being invested according to Sharia principles.

Straight Path Financial Planning can help affected members understand their options and explore alternative
Sharia-compliant superannuation and investment solutions based on their individual circumstances.

Why Is Hejaz Super Closing?

Hejaz Islamic Super & Pension members are being required to make alternative arrangements for their superannuation. Hejaz Islamic Super & Pension operates as a division of AMG Super, with Equity Trustees Superannuation Limited acting as trustee.
Equity Trustees announced in June 2026 that it intended to withdraw from providing independent superannuation trusteeship following a strategic review of its Superannuation Trustee Services business.
The review considered factors including market dynamics, operating requirements, long-term growth opportunities, shareholder value and the changing regulatory environment.
Equity Trustees' latest FY26 results confirm that the withdrawal from its Superannuation Services business is continuing. This distinction is important. The closure relates to Hejaz Islamic Super & Pension and the superannuation arrangements, rather than meaning that every business operated by the broader Hejaz group is necessarily closing.

When is Hejaz Super Closing?
Important Deadlines:

30 September 2026

Hejaz Islamic Super will stop accepting employer contributions, salary sacrifice contributions, personal contributions and rollovers from this date. Members should arrange for future contributions, including employer superannuation contributions, to be directed to an alternative fund.

12 October 2026

This is the key deadline for Hejaz to receive instructions nominating another superannuation fund to receive your benefit. If you do not provide instructions by the deadline, the remaining superannuation benefit is expected to be transferred to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) where it may not be invested.

What Should I Do If I Have Hejaz Super?

There are several things Hejaz members should consider before the closure deadlines.
You will need another superannuation account to receive future contributions.
For members who specifically selected Hejaz because of its Islamic investment approach, this may mean researching another Sharia-compliant super option rather than simply selecting a conventional super fund.

Once your new superannuation account has been established, provide your employer with the required details so future Superannuation Guarantee and salary sacrifice contributions can be directed correctly.
Do not leave this until the final deadline if it can reasonably be arranged earlier.

Hejaz will need the appropriate receiving fund details to transfer your existing superannuation benefit.
The final deadline currently communicated for providing those details is 12 October 2026.

Changing super funds is not simply an administrative decision.
Your new arrangement can affect how your retirement savings are invested, including your exposure to Australian and international shares, property, fixed income, cash and other investments.
If maintaining Sharia compliance is important to you, the underlying investments and Sharia governance of the alternative should also be considered.

You may have insurance associated with your existing superannuation arrangement.
Before making changes, consider what cover you currently hold and what will happen to that cover.

What Is Sharia-Compliant Investing?

Sharia-compliant investing is an approach to investing that considers Islamic principles when determining which companies, industries and financial structures are appropriate for an investment portfolio.
Investment screening commonly considers both the activities of a business and certain financial characteristics.
This may involve avoiding or restricting exposure to businesses substantially involved in activities such as alcohol, gambling, conventional interest-based financial services, other activities considered inconsistent with the relevant Sharia investment methodology.
Financial screening may also consider factors such as a company's level of interest-bearing debt and interest-derived income. Different Sharia screening methodologies and standards can produce different outcomes.
For this reason, it is important to understand the methodology applied to an investment rather than assuming that every product marketed as Islamic or Sharia compliant applies identical criteria.

Seek Financial Advice

Markets change. Legislation changes. Your income, family circumstances and priorities may also change.
Where appropriate, ongoing financial advice and regular reviews can help ensure your strategy continues to reflect your circumstances and long-term objectives.

People seek financial advice for many different reasons.
Depending on your circumstances, this may include:

Sharia-compliant investment strategies
Halal investment options
Superannuation
Sharia-compliant superannuation options
SMSF investment strategies
Retirement planning
Wealth creation
Personal insurance considerations
Estate planning
Ongoing portfolio management

Look for professional guidance before making an important financial decision.
You don't necessarily need to wait until you have accumulated significant wealth before speaking with a financial adviser.
The appropriate time to seek advice depends on your circumstances and the financial decisions you are considering.

What Are the Alternatives to Hejaz Super?

With our expert guidance, we simplify the complexities of investing, helping you make confident decisions.
For example, some arrangements may provide predetermined Islamic investment options, while other superannuation structures may provide broader investment choice.
The important question is therefore not simply:
“What is replacing Hejaz Super?”
A better question is:
“Which alternative superannuation arrangement is appropriate for my circumstances while also meeting my requirements for Sharia-compliant investing?”
This requires consideration of both the superannuation structure and the investments held within it.

Should I Rollover My Hejaz Super?

The closure means members will need to deal with their existing superannuation, but choosing where to rollover Hejaz Super is a separate decision.
A rollover decision can have consequences for your:
  • Investments
  • Fees
  • Insurance
  • Tax position in some circumstances
  • Beneficiary arrangements
  • Retirement strategy
  • Future contributions
For that reason, choosing a new super fund solely because it appears to be the closest replacement for Hejaz may not necessarily produce the most appropriate outcome.
Your personal circumstances should be considered.

What Happens If I Don't Move My Hejaz Super?

Members should pay particular attention to the 12 October 2026 deadline.
Current information states that if Hejaz has not received details of your new superannuation account by this date, your balance will be transferred to the ATO.
This does not mean that your superannuation simply disappears.
However, for someone who specifically wants their retirement savings invested according to Islamic principles, having the money transferred to the ATO rather than an investment arrangement selected by the member may not align with their intended investment strategy.
It is therefore worth considering your options before the deadline rather than waiting until the closure process is completed.
